Cedar Siding and Outdoor Teak Furniture Refinishing

Hey guys, we are in the back of the property here in Pasadena, and I just wanted to point out a few things. One of them is this beautiful Harbor Outdoor furniture. We chose to use a water-based coating here—a water-based film-forming coating. We applied multiple coats after taking the sling off, sanding everything down, and spray-coating it with three layers of the water-based coating.
We talked it over with the client to ensure they understood the pros and cons. We feel there are mostly cons when it comes to water-based products, and we almost never use them. However, in this application, we felt it was okay since the furniture is under a covered patio. If it were fully exposed to the elements, it would be a different story because water-based coatings tend to blister, peel, and turn white over time. The client does have a few pieces out in direct sunlight, but they use protective covers, which help with the longevity of the coating.
We chose the water-based coating because the client has small children, and they were concerned about spills, grease, crayon marks, and everything else that comes with young kids. In this specific case, we feel it’s a good product for the application. Again, we don’t typically use it, but it looks beautiful and came out really, really nice.
This furniture here is made by Restoration Hardware. It’s absolutely beautiful and stunning. I love these double chaise lounges. Again, we used the water-based coating. While we typically don’t use that product, it’s great for this application. The client is fully aware that they must use the protective covers when the furniture isn’t in use. Otherwise, the finish—whether water-based, oil-based, clear coat, varnish, or urethane—will blister and peel. They’ve committed to using the covers diligently, and we think it came out beautifully. The natural honey-blonde teak look is stunning. I love the chairs behind me—they’re absolutely beautiful and complement this modern home really well.
We also worked on some cedar in the barbecue area and more outdoor teak furniture from Restoration Hardware. It’s all stunning—really beautiful, high-quality pieces. Look at that cedar; it’s just popping! Absolutely gorgeous.
Now we’re in the middle foyer of the house. This particular area doesn’t get as much sun as other parts of the property, which means maintenance will be needed less often. This area, covered by an overhang, is shaded by large trees, shrubbery, and other landscaping. Since it gets varying amounts of sunlight and little to no rain, the coating here will last longer and look good for a long time—probably two to three years before it needs maintenance.
Whenever it’s visually necessary, we’ll come back and do maintenance. In Southern California, we’ve had a lot of weather recently, including rain, and it looks like we’re scheduled for more rain this year. Even under a covered patio, the weather will affect how things age and wear. We always advise our clients to monitor the surfaces and let us know when maintenance becomes necessary.
